Imperial Japanese Good Luck Signed Flag-0081

This attractive and colorful silk Imperial Japanese Good Luck Signed Flag measures approximately 28.50″ X 38.25″. The white silk has age toned to warm cream color. Both corners have their well-worn, gold foil paper corner tabs present.  Only the lower tab has a tie string in place. The flag is in overall very good condition, with just a few small holes and stains present. The flag is “Presented to Okano Taizo from the Teramichi Town Association”. It is dated, “An auspicious day of February-1944.” Teramichi (the name literally means temple district or area) may refer to an area of Kyoto that was reorganized a few hundred years ago by the samurai warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Also possible is that Teramichi refers to a place that is located in Nagasaki and is called “temple town”. The flag also contains various names as well as the slogan, Buun Chokyu or “May your military fortunes be long lasting.”
