Memorial/Funeral or Formal Family Portrait of a Young Imperial Japanese Navy Sailor
This is a fine black and white, formal portrait of a young Japanese navy sailor. The photo has additional hand tinted highlights, which make me think this might be a memorial/funeral portrait. These were commonly made in Japan during the war when a family’s son was killed. They typically were placed in a frame and stood on an altar or easel during the funeral service. The picture measures approximately 9.5″ wide X 11.5″ high. It is affixed to its original matting paper, which has darkened with age.
This is a fine example with no rips or tears; ready for display.
